Ask her to read "The Celestine Prophecy" by James Redfield. There's nothing religious or off-putting about it, but helps a person to find their place and path in their world. I had nine or ten people read it and they all say it changed their life.

I think people on the brink of suicide, unless its been a lifelong obsession, is really just a person reaching out for help and/or companionship, i.e., somebody to listen to them. I was in that position once and out of sheer desperation I called my childhood friend's mother of all people out in California. I didn't let on that I was suicidal or anything. We just ended up talking for over an hour. And that was all I needed...to connect with someone who knew me and to just talk about memories. I don't know how serious your friend is, but taking her out for a drink (although alcohol is a depressent) might just be what she needs. Good luck.
